DirecTV Now is one of the most popular television streaming services in the United States. Sad to say, it’s not available elsewhere. The only way for you to access it in another country is by using a capable VPN service provider.

You’ve got a lot of options if you’re looking for a DirecTV Now VPN. However, only a handful of them manage to unblock the platform consistently. Even fewer are capable of allowing you to watch without encountering issues such as buffering, long loading times, and quality drops.

In this article, we’ll go over what I think are the best VPNs for DirecTV Now. Following that, we shall talk about everything else that you need to know in regards to the subject.

What Are The Best VPNs For DirecTV Now In 2022?

1. NordVPN

Streaming Capabilities: NordVPN is a great choice when it comes to streaming. It has a rather large network of 5500+ servers. More than a thousand of them are located in the United States and are capable of bypassing DirecTV Now’s geo-restrictions. In addition to that, these servers are very fast. In fact, none of them have ever slowed my internet speeds to a significant degree.

Accessing the global internet in China is easier said than done. Luckily, NordVPN is one of the few providers that’s able to reliably leap over the country’s Great Firewall. With itself, gaining complete access to DirecTV Now in China will be an absolute breeze.

Privacy & Security: NordVPN takes privacy and security very seriously. It utilizes military-grade AES-256 encryption. Alongside that, it supports every leading VPN protocol. The provider even has something called NordLynx, which is a modified protocol that’s based on WireGuard.

The server network of NordVPN will soon be 100% RAM-based. As such, the provider will soon be able to truly abide by its strict zero-logging policy. With that said, even now, it’s safe to say that your private information is in safe hands when you’re connected to NordVPN’s servers.

It should also be mentioned that you won’t have a hard time with NordVPN’s apps and browser extensions. Aside from being user-friendly, they’re also very easy to configure. Moreover, they have got lots of useful features that you can use while streaming content on DirecTV Now.

Pricing: NordVPN is very affordable despite it being a premium VPN. You can purchase a basic 1-month subscription for just $11.95, which is an absolute steal. After all, the provider’s closest competitors on the market all currently have slightly higher rates.

2. ExpressVPN

Streaming Capabilities: DirecTV Now can be accessed from outside the US without difficulty with the help of ExpressVPN. The VPN has a network that comprises more than 3200 server locations. Nearly all of them have a very capable network of servers that can be utilized for streaming purposes because they’ve got excellent speed and unblocking capabilities.

Given that it’s a top-tier provider, it shouldn’t surprise you that ExpressVPN is China-capable. It easily gets around the Great Firewall and allows you to access DirecTV Now in the country.

Privacy & Security: ExpressVPN has always been a leader in the VPN industry due in large part to its ability to provide superb levels of digital privacy and security. It maintains a no-logs policy and has a server network that’s 100% RAM-based. Moreover, it has itself subjected to regular audits by PwC, which is a world-renowned security firm.

Every one of ExpressVPNs applications and extensions has very user friendly-interfaces that require almost no learning curve. Also, all of them allow you to toggle an extensive set of VPN protocols, including Lightway, which is ExpressVPN’s proprietary alternative to WireGuard.

One downside of ExpressVPN is that it doesn’t have any exclusive features. Furthermore, the provider also does not have an ad & malware blocker. Last but not least, its native application for iOS lacks an automatic kill switch.

Pricing: ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN providers out there. Hence, it should come as no surprise that it’s a bit pricier than your average VPN. A monthly subscription will currently run you back $12.95, which is a fair price if you ask me.

3. Surfshark

Surfshark screenshot

Streaming Capabilities: Surfshark is my personal go-to for DirecTV Now. Its network is made up of 3200+ locations. The vast majority of which are in the United States and fully capable of getting around geo-restrictions and facilitating seamless streaming sessions with no buffering.

Our Chinese testers have reported success with Surfshark. They have been able to reliably access DirecTV Now and other US-based TV streaming services without issues with its assistance. Due to that, I can recommend the provider to any traveler.

Privacy & Security: The network of Surfshark is completely RAM-disk-enabled. As such, it’s 100% trustworthy as it cannot store your logging information. If anything, this is great as you may rest assured that you’ll not become a victim of data theft while using the VPN provider.

Surfshark also utilizes AES-256 encryption and supports a broad range of protocols. The most notable example is WireGuard, which is arguably your best bet when using DirecTV Now.

All the native applications of Surshark are incredibly easy to use. More importantly, they’ve all got a broad set of features. Besides the usual ad & malware blocker and kill switch, you shall also be getting split tunneling. This feature is great to have for those who value convenience.

Perhaps the one thing that makes Surfshark stand out the most is its support for unlimited simultaneous device connections. That’s right. With a single Surfshark subscription, it’ll be possible for you to fortify the digital security of practically everyone that you know.

Pricing: Surfshark provides incredible value for money given all that it offers. You can buy a 1-month subscription for $12.95, which is the same as what ExpressVPN charges.

4. CyberGhost

CyberGhost screenshot

Streaming Capabilities: The server network of CyberGhost is the world’s largest. As of writing, it comprises more than 7500 locations. For that reason, there’s no reason to doubt that the provider is capable of accessing DirecTV Now outside of the United States.

And yes, the servers of CyberGhost are fast. In fact, their performance is comparable to the servers of other leading providers such as NordVPN and Surfshark. Using them, it’s certain you’ll not have problems with lengthy loading times, buffering, and sudden drops in quality.

Quite interestingly, despite having a massive network, CyberGhost cannot bypass the Great Firewall of China. Because of that, it’s not the best VPN to have for frequent travelers.

Privacy & Security: CyberGhost has excellent privacy and security. While it doesn’t have a RAM-based network, it’s most definitely trustworthy. After all, the provider boasts a no-logs policy and has been able to maintain a flawless security record throughout its existence.

As you might’ve already guessed, CyberGhost employs AES-256 encryption and has support for an extensive array of protocols. More importantly, its user-friendly applications have many useful features. Examples of which include a malware blocker and an automatic kill switch.

It should also be mentioned that CyberGhost allows for up to 7 simultaneous connections. While this offering isn’t as good as Sufrshark’s, it’s still quite decent.

Pricing: CyberGhost will run you back $12.99 for a monthly subscription. This makes it our most expensive option for DirecTV Now. Despite that, I’d still have to say that the price it charges is fair given that it has the largest VPN server network in existence.

5. Private Internet Access (PIA)

Private Internet Access screenshot

Streaming Capabilities: Private Internet Access (PIA) is based in the United States. As such, it should come as no wonder that the provider has many servers within the country. Most of which are fully capable of unblocking DirecTV Now and letting you stream without buffering.

Sad to say, PIA cannot reliably bypass China’s Great Firewall. Our testers in the country have not been able to consistently find success with accessing the global internet using it. Hence, I can’t recommend it to anyone who’s planning to travel to internet-restrictive countries.

Privacy & Security: Even if it’s based in a Five Eyes Alliance member stated, Private Internet Access is trustworthy. It has a stellar reputation that’s never been tarnished. Moreover, the provider maintains a very strict zero-logging policy to prevent private data theft.

PIA utilizes AES-256 military-grade encryption just like all of the other VPNs that I talked about earlier. Aside from that, it supports a lot of protocols, including WireGuard.

Interestingly, the applications of Private Internet Access have support for up to 10 simultaneous device connections. In addition to that, they’ve got a kill switch and one of the VPN industry’s most capable ad & malware blockers called PIA MACE.

Pricing: PIA is the most budget-friendly VPN solution for DirecTV Now. It charges a mere $9.99 for a monthly subscription. I’d have to say that this is an absolutely wonderful bargain especially considering everything that Private Internet Access has to offer.

Access DirecTV Now Outside The US: DirecTV Now is available exclusively in the US and its many overseas territories. If you’re abroad, then you’ll not be able to readily access the TV streaming platform. To do so, you will need either a VPN service provider or a proxy.

Proxies are not recommendable. Even the best ones cannot unlock DirecTV Now with the level of consistency that you’d need. Furthermore, they only work on the browser level, meaning they don’t provide comprehensive digital security across your entire drive.

Privacy & Security: Virtual private networks can keep you secure and anonymous while you’re watching content on DirecTV Now. They usually encrypt your data using military-grade 256-bit AES encryption. Most mainstream providers also support a broad range of VPN protocols.

The chances of your digital privacy and security becoming compromised while you’re connected to a VPN are very slim. If anything, this is great news given that the internet can be a rather risky place to visit. It’s full of dangerous third parties that have malicious intentions.

Improve Internet Connection Speeds: For the most part, VPN providers slow your internet speeds. However, a select few of them can manage to improve your connection. This is achieved by the elimination of the bandwidth throttling established by your ISP.

How To Use A VPN for DirecTV Now

Here’s everything you need to use a DirecTV Now VPN:

  • Get Yourself A VPN

The first thing you must do is get yourself a VPN. A plethora of options are currently available on the market. Sadly though, few of them are actually good for DirecTV Now. That’s because they’ve got subpar networks with servers that can’t bypass the television streaming platform. Our top 3 recommendations are NordVPNExpressVPN, and Surfshark.

  • Install It

Your next course of action should be to install the VPN that you just bought. Doing this is very easy as the entire procedure is completely automatic on most devices.

With that being said, setting up a VPN on a router is a bit more complicated. However, anyone with technical know-how is sure to have zero issues with getting it done. Of course, there’s always the option for you to purchase a pre-configured VPN router for convenience.

  • Pair With A United States Server

After connecting to your VPN, you should pair to a server that’s located in the United States as that’s the only country where DirecTV Now is available.

If you’re wondering which city to pick, always go with the one that’s closest to you. That’s because further VPN servers have a greater impact on your internet speeds.

  • Start Watching

Once you’ve completed all the steps mentioned above, you’re finally ready to start watching on DirecTV Now. During your streaming session, don’t ever disconnect from your provider’s server.

When that’s done, you may immediately get detected by DirecTV Now and then blocked as you are watching from a country where it should be unavailable.

How We Ranked These VPNs

Our rankings came about after we meticulously researched and tested almost every option on the market. In addition, we also got in touch with actual DirecTV Now users to get their vital feedback. Last not least, our team also compared the pricing schemes of our top picks to determine which of them provided the greatest monetary value.
